 History of India in Modern Olympic Games


   

The modern Olympic Games have been organized 31 times so far (2016). In this, the maximum 18 events have been organized in 'Europe', 7 times 'America', 4 times 'Asia' 2 times in 'Australia' continent. Till now 'Africa' is the only continent where and 'Olympic Games' has not been organized even once.


Event held in Paris (1900), Coquette last held in Paris (1900), Golf last held in St. Louis (1904), Motor Sailing last held in London (1908), Tug of War Which was last held in Antwerp (1920), Rugby which was last held in Paris (1924) and Polo which was last held in Berlin (1936).


 India earned its first gold medal in hockey in 1928. The last time India won gold in hockey was in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1980, India won silver medal in 1960 and bronze medal in 1972. India has so far only hockey in the 117 year history of the Olympic sporting event.


• The sporting events that have so far been removed in the Olympics are cricket, which has won medals in badminton, wrestling, weightlifting, shooting, boxing and athletics (by the Anglo-Indian Norman Pritchard during British India). • Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari is credited for becoming India's first woman medalist in Olympic Games.



• In 2016 the 31st Olympic Games were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In these games, India got only two medals including 1 silver and 1 bronze. He finished 67th in the medal tally. Badminton player PV Sindhu won the silver medal for India while the bronze medal was won by Sakshi Malik in freestyle wrestling. Apart from the medals of PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, India's Dipa Karmakar's achievement in Rio de Janeiro was no less commendable. Dipa Karmakar of Agartala (Tripura), the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games, slipped a narrow margin to finish fourth in artistic gymnastics and was deprived of a bronze medal. Dipa Karmakar, 22, has also earned the credit of being the fifth woman in the world to achieve such a feat by successfully completing the extremely dangerous 'Produnova Vault'. • On the occasion of National Sports Day on August 29, 2016, the above three women players, who have achieved outstanding achievements in Rio Olympics, were honored by the President with the country's highest sports award 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award'.
